Baby due and need some saftey questions answered.?

I have bought a baby bumper for the cot(crib) when can I use it? I heard it may cause SIDS if used while baby is a newborn. Is that true?
Is it possible to use a matress (it's wrapped in plastic due to hygene reasons) and put a matress protector and sheet over the matress so the baby doesn't touch the plastic? Some people say it would cause suffocation, but I don't see why if it's covered in a thick mattress and sheets?

You can absolutely use the bumper for your crib. Just make sure it is not overstuffed, and has ties to tie it to the outside of the crib. If you find your baby inching over towards the sides and sleeping against the bumper, then I would suggest removing it.
As for the plastic, just keep it on. A protector and sheet are a great idea. Just make sure your child (when they are around 6 months) does not enjoy playing in the sheets and taking them off. A protector is hard to get through though.
