Question about fetal sounds heard on doppler?

I rented a doppler from www.heartones.com a few weeks ago and it has really eased my mind to hear my baby's heart beating away. But it's really weird ... I can hear a swooshing sound kind of at a steady beat, and then I can hear the baby's heart beat which is a much faster beat. What is that swooshing beat? Sometimes it is steady and then it may slow down for a second or two and speed back up.

That swooshing sound is the blood flowing through the placenta. I am 11 weeks 5 days and my doctor used a doppler on me today and that is what she explained to me.
Congratulations, it's an exciting experience.
