Has anyone used the baby wise books and do they actually seem to work?
I used the baby wise books, and my baby was eating well and sleeping pretty much through the night by 2 months. The important thing to remember is that it's trying to help you discern your child's unique signals for being hungry, tired, etc., so that you can respond to your child's needs, rather than just assuming your child is hungry every time he or she cries. It was also good because it reminded me often that crying is normal for infants, so if you're meeting all of your child's needs, they may still cry - that doesn't mean that you need to feed them or stick something in their mouth to shut them up, you just make sure their needs are met, and try to soothe them by swaddling, holding them, etc., and don't feel like a bad parent if you've had enough and you need to set them in the crib and let them cry for a while. My daughter fights sleep, so she cries a lot when she's tired - I found that she would keep fighting sleep as long as someone was around, sometimes for up to an hour, but if I just set her in her crib and turned out the light, she would fall asleep in less than 10 minutes. If I hadn't read the baby wise books, I never would have figured that out. Now, at 3 1/2 months, I just put her in her crib, say goodnight, rub her belly, and turn out the lights, and she goes to sleep on her own, often without any crying at all.
I know some people take the scheduling to an extreme, but the authors actually warn against that in the book - they recommend flexibility to your child's needs, and say that the "schedule" they propose is only a guideline. They even provide tools so that you can track your baby's natural feeding/diaper patterns, to help you anticipate your child's needs.
