Did you survive a baby without a rocking chair?
I have a lazy boy in my living room, but my concern is, if I rock the baby to sleep there, it is a long walk upstairs. I had a nice glider and ottoman, but I gave it away when the girls were like a year old, as we didn't use it anymore and a friend was in need.
We are adopting a baby and he is due in December. We haven't had that much time to prepare and save money for nicer things like we did with the girls. Fortunately, we still have almost all of their useful things, except this rocking chair. It would be a stretch to throw a new one into the budget at this point, but if truly necessary we could do it.
So, I want to hear from you mommies out there. Did anybody do it without a rocker? I used mine all the time for the girls and wish I still had it. I was thinking about antiquing for a cheap one one I could refinish.
I have had four children, and only used a rocker with one of them, and only because it was given to me as a gift. What I have found that works a lot better than a rocker, is easier to move around, saves more space and is a lot cheaper is a simple yoga ball. Go to a local department store, and look with the exercise stuff. You can usually get one for about 15-20 dollars (I just bought a pink one last week to support breast cancer even though I already had a different one and it was only 16 dollars). I also like to use yoga balls because not every baby is soothed by the back and forth motion of a rocker, but with a yoga ball you can go back and forth, side to side, or bounce up and down. It is very likely you will find something your new baby will like. And, as a side benefit, you are not only calming and bonding with your baby, you also end up working your core and back muscles.
